LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Lubbock Downtown chapter of the American Business Clubs or AMBUCS is advocating for the proposed Lubbock County Expo Center.

The architects for this dirt floor arena project also designed Houston's NRG Stadium and renovation of Texas A&M's Kyle Field.

If approved by voters in November, Lubbock County will increase the hotel-motel occupancy tax by two percent, to 15 percent.

"You go to Amarillo, they're at 16," explained Ray Short with the ABC Pro Rodeo. "Houston I think is 18, Ft. Worth is 17, Abilene's 16. I mean it'll put us more in line with other cities our size."

Bret Lamkin is on the committee leading this project.

"We've also generated an endowment fund of already $10 million, with a goal of $20 million, to offset any unfunded costs," Lamkin said. "Like, if we had a year that it didn't generate or an unexpected cost happens, you know, things like that."

Compounded with a one-percent increase on rental car taxes, the committee indicates the hotel-motel tax would raise $3 million a year. This would offset all the costs. The committee is currently scouting several locations.

Raising the hotel-motel occupancy tax will be "Prop A" on your Nov. 6 ballot. This would not change the sales or property tax rates.
