Lea County traffic stop results in two arrests

LEA COUNTY, New Mexico -

On September 23, 2018, Deputies with the Lea County Sheriff’s Office conducted at traffic stop on a 2001 Toyota Sequoia on Knowles Road in Lea County. The traffic stop was initiated for failure to stop at a posted stop sign. The vehicle was being driven by Jimmy Trevino, 42 years of age from Hobbs, NM. There was a passenger in the vehicle, identified as Brooke Chandler 23 years of age from Hobbs, NM. Upon conducting a records check, the vehicle was reported stolen to the Roswell Police Department on September 5, 2018.

Upon conducting the traffic stop, Trevino stepped out of the vehicle and began to walk away until the Deputy got close to him and Trevino stopped.

Deputies observed a black in color semi-automatic pistol on the center console of the vehicle next to where Trevino was sitting.

Jimmy Trevino was placed under arrest for transferring/receiving stolen property, a second degree felony which carries a punishment of up to nine years in prison. Trevino has three prior convictions for transferring/receiving stolen property. Trevino was also charged for resisting, evading and or obstructing an officer, a misdemeanor which carries a punishment of up to 1 year in jail. Trevino was also charged with Possession of a firearm by a felon, a fourth degree felony punishable by up to 18 months in prison.

Brooke Chandler was sitting in the front seat and while deputies were arresting Trevino they heard the doors lock on the vehicle. Deputies observed Chandler moving position in the vehicle while ignoring the demands of the Deputies. Deputies gained access to the vehicle and placed Chandler under arrest for her outstanding warrants. While Chandler was in the marked patrol car she requested to speak to one of the deputies. When Chandler spoke to the Deputy she offered to the Deputies $10,000.00 each if they didn’t arrest her for her warrants.

Chandler was booked into the Lea County Detention Center for Resisting, evading, obstructing an officer, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in jail; Bribery of Public Officer or public employee, a 3rd degree felony punishable by up to 3 years in prison and two warrants for Failure to Appear.

On September 24, 2018, a search warrant affidavit was approved by a Lea County Magistrate Judge for the Toyota Sequoia. Agents with the Lea County Drug Task Force responded to assist with the investigation.

Upon searching the Toyota Sequoia Agents and Deputies located approximately 49.1 grams of methamphetamine inside of a fake Orange Fanta can. The methamphetamine has a street value of $4,910.00. Also located in the vehicle was .3 grams of heroin along with some drug paraphernalia.

This investigation is ongoing.
