Hobbs woman arrested for embezzlement

On July 24, 2018, Lea County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 7400 block of North Dal Paso, Hobbs, NM in reference to a reported embezzlement at Lea County Roadside.

The victim reported the business credit card had been declined and the credit card limit was maxed out.

On July 26, 2018, Lea County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division learned through a reconciliation audit, suspect Karrie Torrez, age 35 of Hobbs, NM had fraudulently used her employer’s business credit card and checking account to make personal purchases totaling $144,000.

The audit further revealed Torrez had deleted several cashed checks from the Quick Books accounting program totaling $2,530. Torrez was charged with the following crimes: Embezzlement (2 counts over $20,000/ 2nd degree felonies) Tampering with Evidence (1 count/3rd degree felony) On September 17, 2018, Torrez turned herself in at the Lea County Sheriff’s Office.

She was transported to the Lea County Detention Center where she was booked on the above charges. Torrez was released September 17, 2018 on a recognizance bond.
