Fall officially comes tonight - FOX34 Lubbock

Fall officially comes tonight

Fall officially starts this evening, however yesterday was chilly, as if it was on purpose. Friday's high temperature only reached 69° while this morning, Lubbock dipped down to 53°. A quick two-hour drive north into Potter Count, near Amarillo, and you would have woken up to the 30s!

Why does fall start at such a specific time? It has to do with the Autumnal Equinox. It's when the earth is, for lack of accurate "science" terms, straight up and down. The northern hemisphere has been tilting away from the sun since summer solstice (first day of summer), and at this point in the year, the north pole will see as much daylight as the south pole. The earth continues to tilt away from the earth until the first day of winter (the winter solstice). Enough science, here's the forecast.

TONIGHT: Tonight, expect a low of 51° with NE winds 5-15 mph and clear skies.

SUNDAY: Expect sunny skies with a high of 79° and NNW winds near 5mph. I think tonight will be the chilliest night we'll see for a while.

We stay sunny through the beginning of the week. By late Tuesday, we could see a few showers and thunderstorms, and those will persist through Wednesday thanks to some more cool air across the area.
