Patrick Mahomes attributes NFL success to Texas Tech

Patrick Mahomes has started three road games under center for the Chiefs in his time so far at Kansas City. While he is still adjusting to playing at the professional level, the team is 3-0 in his starts.

"I think it's gone well. I got to learn under some pros. Just kind of leaving Lubbock and everything that they've taught me, I feel like it's been a smooth transition so far," Mahomes said.

Mahomes has a lot of people to thank, but attributes a good chunk of that success to his college coach.

"Coach Kingsbury helped me a lot by putting a lot of the game plan and pressure on me. As an NFL QB you have to run a lot of different things, and coach and the entire staff helped me become prepared for this moment," Mahomes said.

"He's very very smart, he's got a photographic memory," Kingsbury said. "The first time we'd teach stuff he'd walk it through and nail it. It's just about the work ethic and preparation and making that a lifestyle. It sounds like he's doing that. He loves when the lights come on, that's him at his best and he's got some good stuff going for him."

Kingsbury's list of QB success stories is well-known. Case Keenum, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, Davis Webb, and now Alan Bowman. He believes Mahomes' ceiling is as high as any QB he's ever come across.

"It's as high as anyone's in that league. You have to have the right situation," Kingsbury said. "I think in that league you have to have the right situation and right now he's got it with a quarterback-minded coach and the type of skill he has around him. He's the most talented QB I've ever seen. There's only a handful of guys who can do what he can do."

In Sunday's 42-37 win over Pittsburgh, Patrick threw for 326 yards and 6 touchdowns. In the first two weeks of the season he has thrown 10 touchdowns, an NFL record.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who has been a head coach in the NFL for 20 years, knew of Mahomes' potential when he traded up for him on draft night.

"What you're getting is a smart kid that wants to be good. He's gonna get here, spend time here, and watch tape," Reid said.

Reid is keeping Mahomes' grounded, saying he can't get complacent.

"Everything is not going to be roses. He's a young guy but if he keeps that attitude he'll be fine," Reid said.

"Everything that comes with Lubbock and the coaching staff and everything that has been important to me and my college life and has gotten me to this point now," Mahomes said.
