New poll: O'Rourke leads Cruz by 2 points

Posted: Updated:

A day after a poll showed Senator Cruz with a nine-point lead over Rep. Beto O'Rourke, a new Reuters poll paints a different picture among likely Texas voters.

O'Rourke has a 47-45 percent lead over Cruz, according to the Rueters/Ipsos/UVA Center for Politics Poll. The two-point lead is within the poll's four-percentage-point credibility interval, a measure of precision. According to Reuters, this means the candidates are drawing about the same level of support.

The poll was conducted online, in English, from Sept. 5 to 17, surveying 992 likely Texas voters.

The survey found Cruz's feuds with then-candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign hurt his standing with some Texas Republicans, according to Larry Sabato, director of the UVA Center for Politics.

The poll shows Hispanic voters prefer O'Rourke by roughly a 2-to-1 margin. Cruz is of Cuban heritage, O'Rourke of Irish heritage.

The Lubbock County Republican Party, State Senator Perry and State Representatives Frullo and Burrows will host a campaign rally for Cruz Saturday on the Texas Tech campus. It'll be 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center. Click here - for event information.
