Pedestrian killed on US Highway 62/82 in Lea County

LEA COUNTY, New Mexico -

On September 15, at 11:05 PM, Lea County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an accident with injuries at US Highway 62/180 milepost 70 in Lea County.

It was reported a pedestrian, later identified as Christopher Gomez, 25, of Artesia, NM had wandered onto the roadway and was ran over by an unidentified crude oil truck hauler. A witness at the scene not related to Gomez reported observing Gomez wander onto the roadway and lay down across the westbound lane before being struck.

It is unknown if the driver of the crude oil truck hauler saw Gomez on the roadway. Gomez sustained numerous life-threatening injuries. Upon the arrival of Deputies, they immediately recognized the injuries to Gomez were severe and immediate medical attention was necessary.

Due to weather conditions, Gomez was driven by ambulance to the Carlsbad Medical Center. He was later airlifted to University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas where he remains hospitalized.
