LUBBOCK, Texas -

Its prominence in Europe and the Americas makes Spanish one of the most common languages worldwide, about 442 million people speak it according to the Accredited Language Services. Spanish is second only to Chinese as the most spoken language in the world, along with the 400 million native speakers just shy of 9 million people speak Spanish as a second language.

"If you are bilingual you have more chances to get hired in the health system and more chances to earn more money," said Maria Rodriguez, a Spanish tutor at Texas Tech. "The same thing for business, in business we have a lot of transactions between other countries, so the more professional Spanish you learn the better success you'll have in you career or in business."

Texas Tech's National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society Sigma Delta Pi celebrates Lubbock Spanish day. It's an open discussion focusing on the global importance of the Spanish language and the relevance it has today.

"You can actually understand the culture once you understand the language," said Carla Millares, a Texas Tech doctoral student in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications. "You can really get to know the people and have a really close relationship with this group."

Rodriguez adds that there is a high demand for bilingual professionals especially in the health, legal, and business sectors. She encourages students to look into Tech's Spanish language programs and clubs. Sigma Delta Pi :
