Cruz holds nine-point lead in new poll of likely TX voters

Posted: Updated:

Senator Cruz has a 54-45 percent lead among likely voters over Rep. Beto O'Rourke in the race for Cruz's Senate seat according to a new Quinnipiac University Poll.

This is the first Quinnipiac Poll among likely voters in the race.

Among likely voters, 93 percent say their mind is made up. This includes 94 percent of Cruz backers and 92 percent of O'Rourke backers.

Among women in the poll, 50 percent support Cruz, 48 percent O'Rourke. Men support Cruz 57-42 percent. Among white voters Cruz has a 66-32 percent lead. O'Rourke leads among black voters polled with 97-3 percent and among Hispanics with 54-45 percent.

Among Texas likely voters Cruz has a 53 - 44 percent approval rate. These voters polled give him a 52 percent favorability rate versus 43 percent who do not view him favorably. O'Rourke has a divided 43-42 percent favorability rating.

"The Texas U.S. Senate race between Sen. Ted Cruz and Congressman Beto O'Rourke, and Democratic hopes for an upset win there, have boosted talk of a Senate takeover. These numbers may calm that talk," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll in a release from Quinnipiac. "Congressman O'Rourke may be drawing big crowds and media attention, but Texas likely voters like Sen. Cruz better."

27 percent of likely Texas voters list immigration as the most important issue in this race. 21 percent list health care, 16 percent the U.S. Supreme Court, 15 percent the economy.

The Lubbock County Republican Party, State Senator Perry and State Representatives Frullo and Burrows will host a campaign rally for Cruz Saturday on the Texas Tech campus. It'll be 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center. Click here - for event information.
