LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock Police welcomes two new K9's to it's team. Tex and Kimbo expand LPD's K9 unit to eight dogs.

Kimbo will be trained to detect narcotics and patrol methods. Corporal Brock Gruner said the dogs will be trained on patrol methods and be able to detect marijuana, cocaine, heroine and methamphetomine.

"Say I was to go do an area search or building search and the person possibly has a handgun or something of that nature," he said. "I'm going to be able to send my dog due to the circumstances and place my dog being that he is a tool for the police department at that point in time while he's in service and be able to prevent any officers from having to go into an area that could be detrimental to them."

Gruner said it takes 10 months to a year for officers to be 100 percent confident with the K9's, but they do become like a best friend.
