Cooler days with a better chance for rain ahead

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

THIS AFTERNOON: It's sunny and hot, temperature in the mid to upper 90s. There are a few storms in Central New Mexico and a few down along the Gulf in SE Texas. Between it's just sunny and hot for much of Texas.

TONIGHT: Warm for Friday night football, dropping into the 80s around 8 p.m. S/SE wind a little gusty early.

Low near 71, mostly clear.

SATURDAY: Lots of sun and hot, though not as hot as the past few days. High near 93. Wind S/SE 10-18mph.

There's a slight chance for storms late Saturday, change higher to the west of Lubbock.

SUNDAY: This will be the start of a pattern change, with more clouds and the high in the upper 80s. We've got a 30% chance for showers and storms Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: The pattern doesn't change much from day to day, with a good amount of humidity in place with lots of clouds. The high pressure dome that's been across our region this week will be far off to the east. Each afternoon and evening we have a chance for rain and storms, with the chance highest Monday and Tuesday.

Deep in a drought we're pessimistic when looking at model output of rain totals. But at this point it looks pretty likely that much of our area will get 1/10" to 1/2", with some locations picking up more than 1". With so much humidity and weak wind aloft, we'll have some slow-moving showers and storms.

The rain chance will trend lower by late next week, with a slight warming trend.

7-day forecast

TEXAS TECH FORECAST: Muggy with a good chance for storms Saturday and Sunday in Houston. High temp in the lower 90s, heat index much higher. It'll be nice and comfortable inside NRG Stadium.

Have a great weekend. Robert will have a full update to the forecast here Saturday afternoon. Guns Up! for Tech Football.
