LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock County VOICES Coalition hosted an Overdose Awareness and Remembrance event.

The event gives community members an opportunity to learn more about overdose prevention and substance use disorders.

The program director said knowing real facts about substances and what to do when seeing someone experience an overdoes, helps save lives.

"I can tell you that eighty-one percent of our youth have used prescription opioids at one time or another for non-health issues. So, they're using them just to try them out to figure out how it's going to make them feel, it's not because a doctor prescribed it to them. And so, that's a big number for our region," Teresa Alvarado, Program Director, said.

City Councilman Randy Christian announced August 31st as Overdose Awareness Day in Lubbock.
