City of Hobbs announces completion of renovation of City Park

HOBBS, New Mexico -

(Press Release)

The City of Hobbs (City), JF Maddox Foundation (Foundation), and Hobbs Municipal Schools (HMS) established a special partnership to provide funding for major renovations to City Park. The purpose of this project was two-fold: to provide significant updates to the City’s very first park and to enhance the park in ways consistent with recent developments in the immediate neighborhood, including the new Murray Elementary School.

The City and HMS agreed to allocate capital dollars to make improvements to City Park following the opening of Murray Elementary School with the intent to make City Park a joint-use facility common to both the City and School District given the new school. In view of the fact that the James Murray family donated the land for City Park in the 1940’s, the concept of a joint use arrangement between the City and the School District was considered most appropriate. The City and the School District shared with the Foundation its plans and the Foundation expressed an interest in supporting the project. As a result, an expanded vision for City Park emerged. The Foundation shared the City and School District’s perspective that City Park holds a special place in the City’s history and that it should be restored to the more prominent park it once was.

The resulting project budget for City Park was $4,423,785. The project was made possible by capital commitments including $275,000 from the City, $350,000 from HMS, and $3,740,000 from the Foundation. The resulting improvements to City Park are extensive and are expected to renew City Park’s status as a recreational destination for the City.

The renewed City Park will be formally dedicated on Tuesday, September 18th at 2 P.M. All members of the community are invited to celebrate the reveal of the new and improved, beautiful City Park, a place where many members of our community hold special memories.
