Senator Cruz campaigns in Lubbock, blasts O'Rourke's record

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Senator Ted Cruz, while making a campaign stop in Lubbock, blasted his Democratic opponent, El paso Congressman Beto O'Rourke.

Cruz questioned O'Rourke's record and said the congressman voted against protecting Israel, is open to the idea of abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, wants to raise the estate tax and would vote to impeach President Trump immediately.

The senator said that vitriol from "the left" could put Republicans in a precarious position come November.

"It unifies them, it helps them patch up their differences. They may disagree on different issues but they all agree they hate Trump and that's a reason to show up. The danger on the Republican side issues is that the economy is booming and people are doing well and it's easier to be distracted, to be focused on your job or your family, or kids, or just something else," Cruz said, "and the numbers are with us. The vast majority of Texans are conservatives, common sense conservatives. But the urgency, much of the urgency is on the other side and that's dangerous."

Cruz also criticizeed O'Rourke for turning down an invitation to debate Friday in Dallas. It was the first of five face-offs the campaigns agreed to last month. Four more are tentatively scheduled through September and October, including one in Lubbock.

Recent polling shows a tight race with Cruz and O'Rourke well within the margin of error among likely Texas voters.
