Lubbock nurse reflects after 50 years of saving lives

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

For almost a half century, a Lubbock nurse has faithfully served patients in a decorated career.

Rose Johnson with BrightStar Care said her motivation as a nurse is to have a servant’s heart and to help as many people as she can.

“The passion I found was just knowing that I could make a difference in somebody’s life... at some point,” Johnson said.

Johnson said she believes this was God’s plan for her, as she said she did not expect to become a nurse

“Truthfully, I never knew I wanted to be a nurse after I got out of high school,” Johnson said. “It was divine intervention. There is no doubt. I never knew I wanted to be a nurse, but somehow I ended up at St. Mary’s Hospital and Nursing Program.”

Once she moved to Lubbock, Johnson said she expanded her purpose and found her home.

“I really learned to love it and once I got out and started working, I really loved it. And I was so happy that I had felt something that you know would bring me such, just a sense of purpose,” Johnson said.

Through all of the changes in technology and research, Johnson said one thing has remained a constant in her career.

“People have not changed. They still have the same illnesses, they have the same fears, and that’s where we come in with a servant’s heart to calm those fears and treat those illnesses,” Johnson said.

Johnson added that she plans on continuing to serve the Lubbock community and does not intend to retire in the near future.
