LUBBOCK, Texas -

Senator McCain hailed as a war hero, comes from a long line of patriots.

The former U.S. Navy pilot was captured in 1967 when his aircraft was shot down during a bombing mission. He spent over five years in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" prison.

Benny Guerrero with the Veterans of Foreign Wars said he believes the loss of McCain is a loss of a fighting spirit.

"Some of us are die hard republicans, some of us are die hard democrats, this guy, John McCain was a die hard american. That's what made him unique, that's why they called him Maverick, he was able to reach on the other sides of the political isle, and reach out to come to a compromise so we can solve problems," he said.

Guerrero said McCain played a critical role in normalizing relations between Vietnam and the U.S.
