New study finds seniors leaving retirement and going into workforce

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Instead of hobbies and travel a new study conducted by Home Instead Senior Care indicates that more and more retirees are re-joining the work force, more than half of workers approaching retirement in the next five years believe they will likely return to work. Home Instead Senior Care is an organization that specializes in non medical in home care for the elderly. Tracy Baugh, franchise owner of the Lubbock office said there are several reasons why many seniors choose to go back to work after initially retiring.

"Some of it is economic with rising prices in Medicare limited and also social security not covering all of the expenses that seniors have,” said Baugh." Many feel they have something to offer and they don’t want to stay at home. They want to continue to be a part of the community and so they want to use their skills and their lifelong experiences."

After working for decades waiting tables, chopping cotton, working in banks, working for insurance companies, and prison systems and even teaching, Janice Giddens said she honestly wasn’t ready to retire.

"The Texas Prison Department was changing things out like they do occasionally and they were closing down that school in Rudd in Brownfield and they did offer me another position, but it was out of driving range for me it was too far, and so I had the opportunity so I went ahead and retired," said Giddens. "I did not want to I had a great group of teachers that I rode over with back and forth we would carpool from here and I really liked it and I wasn’t too happy about it, but I had to do what was best for my family and myself.”

According to the study 80% of those surveyed reported wanting to make a meaningful impact in their communities whether it be volunteering taking a role in care giving or teaching.

“If we are living longer we need to be useful longer," said Giddens." It’s what I feel I need to be.”

Home Instead Senior Care has a career assessment tool called Un-retire Yourself: for seniors who want to go back into the workforce.
