LUBBOCK, Texas -

Habitat for Humanity kicked off its annual build project.

The foundation's goal is to build four to five homes for underprivileged families.

Joe Puckett, president-elect for Lubbock's Habitat for Humanity, says the project is designed to get families back on their feet until they can pay it back.

"It's a hand-up, not a handout," Puckett said. "These are people who have had some, for whatever reason, hard times. And they may be single moms with children, and they don't have a house. They might be living out of their car or they're living with their relative, and usually in crammed spaces. And they just want a home of their own."

Recipients must pass certain qualifications, including have a low- to moderate-income family.
