LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Texas Tech University System Board of Regents named Tedd L. Mitchell M.D. the interim chancellor of the TTU System Monday. Mitchell, president of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, received TTU System Board of Regents during a special-called meeting of the board by telephone conference this morning.

Mitchell will begin his interim chancellor duties Sept. 1 while remaining president of TTUHSC during this interim period.

Texas Tech regents during a teleconference meeting Monday morning approved Chairman Rick Francis announcing the appointment of an interim chancellor.

The motion gives Francis the authority to make the announcement "at the appropriate time", with no specifics on when the announcement could come.

A week ago Chancellor Robert Duncan announced his retirement, effective at the end of the month. He's served as chancellor since July 2014.

Duncan did not give a reason for the sudden departure. The announcement came days after the most recent Board of Regents meeting. Regents have yet to give an explanation on the sudden turn of events.

Several lawmakers, including Lubbock State Senator Charles Perry, believe Duncan's push for a Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine led to his ousting.
