City of Hobbs hires new assistant city attorney Valerie Chacon

The City of Hobbs is proud to announce Valerie S. Chacon as one of the newest additions to the organization, making an entrance into the Legal Department, effective July 30, 2018. A Hobbs High School graduate, Valerie Chacon returns to her hometown to serve as the Assistant City Attorney for the City of Hobbs. In her new position, Mrs. Chacon will be prosecuting all cases in Municipal Court. Daughter of Laura and Juaquin Castillo, Hobbs is where Ms. Chacon grew up and where she now chooses to begin her family with her husband Arturo Chacon.

Mrs. Chacon earned her education with a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Science and Major in Criminology from Texas Tech University and a Law Degree from Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Mrs. Chacon is fluent in both English and Spanish, having served as a translator as well as prepared and tried cases during law internships while attending college and law school. She comes with an array of achievements, such as the Dean’s List both at her university and law school, the Honor Society in high school, being a Hispanic Law Student Association member, and earning Student Attorney credits at immigration and family law clinics. Showing that home was always calling her back, Mrs. Chacon also completed her term as Clinical Law Student while working with the Fifth Judicial District Attorneys in Lea County. . This active, extensive experience will greatly aid her in performance as Assistant City Attorney for the City of Hobbs.

Acting City Manager, Manny Gomez stated, “I congratulate Mrs. Chacon and her family on her new position, as well as support and guidance to the Legal Department as they grow. It is great to see a native Hobbsan prosper in and contribute to our community. Thank you to the City Commission, City of Hobbs organization, and our community for supporting the growth of this department.”

On the addition to the Legal Department, Hobbs City Attorney Efren Cortez stated, “As a Hobbs High School graduate and second-generation attorney, Valerie is an outstanding asset for our department. She has a strong foundation in the law and familiarity with the common issues in Hobbs, New Mexico. She also brings great enthusiasm to the Legal Department and the City of Hobbs. I believe it is extraordinary that Valerie would return home to begin her career. I look forward to her continued success in the legal profession.”

On her new endeavor, Valerie Chacon stated, “It is an honor to be a member of this organization, and I am proud to represent my hometown in this new capacity. I am looking forward to not only what I can learn from Mr. Cortez and growing from my experience here, but also to how I may help the City of Hobbs organization develop. I am grateful to the community for this opportunity.”
