UPDATED: Storms through early morning

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

updated 10:22 p.m. - Scattered storms have developed over and moved into the western half of our area. There was even a gust of 60mph clocked near Lamesa. The severe threat is fairly tame for tonight, though we can't rule out a few gusty storms. To this point all the rain has been west of Lubbock, storms moving SSE.

South Plains radar

The chance for storms continues through early morning. If you miss the rain, don't worry...the chance looks pretty good again late Friday and Saturday.

THIS AFTERNOON: It's warmed to the lower 90s around much of our area, though it's only reached the mid 80s to the northeast of Lubbock. A few showers and weak storms moved across the northern part of the area this morning into early afternoon. It wasn't much rain, at most a few hundredths of an inch.

Now we're looking to the west and northwest, where there are storms across much of New Mexico. The environment across our area will be better suited to keep the storms ongoing through the night and early morning.

West Texas radar

The Storm Prediction Center is not expected to issue a severe watch for NE New Mexico, though there will likely be a few more severe storms with hail and wind.

TONIGHT: Showers and storms are likely late tonight through early morning. Storms will move from NW to SE across our area. Coverage should be pretty good. Some storms could have hail and gusty wind, though it isn't a pronounced severe threat. Heavy rain is also possible...and welcome.

Low near 66. Wind NE 5-15mph.

THURSDAY: Latest data shows we'll probably miss our on rain during the day Thursday. Even later at night, the chance for rain doesn't look great. With a good amount of sun we're forecasting 89 in Lubbock with 90s south of the city. Wind NE 5-15mph.

WET PATTERN: While the rain chance drops off tomorrow, it looks better Friday and Saturday. Rain one day can influence the small-scale features for the next day's rain chance. So it's somewhat wait-and-see from day to day. But at this point Friday and Saturday look better for rain. Rain and clouds Saturday afternoon will probably keep the temperature in the 70s.

The rain chance will slowly diminish into early next week. But for August this is a long stretch of cooler weather. Keep in mind the average high is 92.

7-day forecast

Have a great evening. I'll have an updated look at the storm timing tonight on FOX34 News at Nine. Bobby will have an updated forecast posted here tomorrow morning.
