LUBBOCK, Texas -

Texas Tech's college of Visual and Performing Arts and LUCA are giving students from the East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood Community Foundation a once in a lifetime experience.

Students from Alderson, Ervin, Harwell, and Hodges Elementary are taking art, music, theater, and dance classes for a week under the guidance of expert instructors.

Jared Strange program coordinator of the Eastside Arts Camp said the purpose of the program is to give those under served students the opportunity to study and grow in the heart of the Lubbock arts scene.

"I think it is important to give kids an opportunity to engage with the arts and to perhaps discover something that can interest them and sustain them and even become a future for them for the rest of their lives, we work with a lot of students who don't have as many opportunities to engage with the arts outside of school particularly in the summer," Strange said.

This years theme is "earth love" during this week long camp students are learning how to create art with recycled items and will also be painting a mural on an exterior wall at the roots community revitalization center.
