Eppler: "Fallout" one of the best "Mission" movies

"Mission: Impossible - Fallout" is pretty awesome - and not in the flippant way we tend to use that word. It actually inspires awe.

I'm tempted to just kinda do the easy thing and post clips of some of the best action scenes and stunts from "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" because there are so many that are spectacular - from an expertly photographed motorcycle chase through Paris with Tom Cruise speeding through traffic without a helmet to a head-spinning helicopter chase that he actually flew.

Sure, I could spend time going through the minutia of a convoluted plot about double-crosses, uranium and nuclear weapons, who wants them, and why, but let's be real - we're all just here to watch this maniac throw himself off a plane at 25,000 feet.

I guess there are a few things you might want to know: "Fallout" is written as a direct sequel to the last movie, "Rogue Nation," and it's directed by the same guy - Christopher McQuarrie, the first director to helm two of these movies because he has a great eye for creative action set pieces with his star who is up for anything.

McQuarrie tries to add some synergy to this long-running series with callbacks to earlier movies. Unfortunately, many of the familiar cliches are here too, like those darn peel-away masks, secret identities, and, of course, a ticking clock. "Fallout" tries to fool us so many times that the audience will surely predict the twists coming. But it's so well made and such a blast to watch that it feels ungrateful to complain too much. I mean, here's one of the biggest movie stars in the world risking his life and seriously injuring himself to entertain us - and I'm gonna sit here and whine about plot contrivances? Shame on me.

"Fallout" is one of the best "Mission" movies. I only worry that the series has peaked with this one because I can't imagine how Cruise and Company will top it. But I can't wait to watch them try in a few years when he's pushing 60 years old.
