Men may exaggerate their "number"

Men may exaggerate their "number"

Posted: Updated:

When asked in past surveys, men reported having far more sexual partners than women have. Scientists now believe they know why.

Scottish researchers analyzed the responses of more than 15,000 men and women in a survey that found the average number of lifetime sexual partners among men was 14, and only 7 lifetime partners for women.

They found out three things:

First, the respondents who reported very high numbers of sexual partners skewed the averages, and this effect was stronger among men than women.

Second, the men were more likely to estimate their numbers, while the women would actually count them.

Third, attitudes about casual sex played a role. Women were less likely to view one-night stands as "not wrong" and the women were more likely to consider having sex outside the marriage as "always wrong."
