City of Lubbock highlights 'homeless court'

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

The City of Lubbock has offered a look at ts municipal "homeless court", which helps struggling individuals cope with their legal problems.

The court partners with Family Promise and the South Plains Homeless Consortium, to eliminate fines and court costs for those who would otherwise find it impossible to afford.

It offers alternative ways to deal with outstanding warrants and misdemeanors.

At the same time, the court utilizes shelters and service agencies to focus on rehabilitation to help the homeless get back into the system and back to work.

"Just because they don't have money they can still come to court without running the risk of being arrested," Municipal Judge Jorge Hernandez said. "They can do counseling, they can continue their A.A. meetings, their N.A. meetings, and we take that into account and credit it to their fines and court costs."

Judge Hernandez says the program helps build a better community for Lubbock. These defendants volunteer for the hearing and must be referred by a sponsoring shelter or organization.
