LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock City Council members approved a resolution to convert park land off of Dunbar Lake at 19th Street and MLK Blvd. for a police substation.

Chief Greg Stevens says it's an ideal spot, because of the easy access to all the major roads and the city already owns the property. Stevens says the substation will serve everything east of University Avenue.

He adds, right now it's a place where police are constantly going to, so this will increase the police presence.

During public comments on neighbor said he is in favor of the substations, but recommends the city look at other properties to preserve the nature of the lake, or develop it into a riverwalk.

Council will revisit the plans to finalize and potentially move forward with integrating police stations into other neighborhoods as part of its community policing strategy.
