Lubbock community development program expends budget

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock's community development program has expended its budget for helping rebuild infrastructure and homes in north and east Lubbock.

In a presentation to council members at a work session staffers reported the money set aside ran out at the end of June.

It's specifically provided repairs to damaged or older homes, covering roof, window, and foundation repairs.

The department is not totally out of money though. There are both federal and state block grants available.

"What we do is, we'll go out and repair their system if they have an existing system; if they have a window unit, we'll try to repair that window unit; if it's an AVAP system-- whatever it is, at this time we'll try to repair it," Karen Murfee, Director of Community Development, said.

Murfee said the city won't do the repairs if you have one heated or cooled room.

The system has to be completely non-operational.

If you don't qualify for this service, staffers will put you on the list for a minor repair service that has a longer wait time.
