Sondra's Song resident receives life changing scholarship

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Transitioning into adulthood is challenging for anyone, but especially for those who are aging out of foster care. Here in Lubbock, the non-profit Sondra's Song helps young people from across the state make that transition.

John Ever is a resident of the organization. The 19-year-old Texas Tech sophomore entered the foster care system at 14. He had previously been living with adoption parents.

"It is about survival," Ever said. "But once you age out, leave that last roof over your head, you shouldn't just have that mindset that life is just survival because it's not. "

He is now studying political science and journalism with the hopes of going to law school. With the help of Sondra's Song and working part time, Ever said he is managing well but life just got a little easier. Ever is receiving a $90,000 dollar scholarship from the organization, Together We Rise

Ever had to mail in an essay explaining his story, had a Skype interview, then flew to California for an in person interview. Sandi Turner, Founder of Sondra's Song said he is the third resident to receive the award.

"He just takes care of business, goes to school, he works, takes care of paperwork, takes care of whatever he needs," Turner said.

Ever said even as a kid, he was always focused on doing well in the classroom, but this accomplishment is helping him reach all his academic goals.

"He has everything in order, and he has a goal and if he allows me, I will help him get there," Turner said. "By either griping at him, loving him, pushing him, reminding him, you know as long as he's in our program, that's what we can give him."

Ever's dream is to become an attorney and eventually start a foundation of his own helping youth in foster care.
