Victoria, TX -

A federal jury convicts a defendant on a hate crime charge for burning a mosque in Victoria.

Marq Perez, 26, set fire to the Victoria Islamic Center in January of last year.

He's also convicted for having an unregistered destructive device for an incident a couple weeks before that.\

Witnesses detail how Perez called Muslims a derogatory slang term and hate-filled messages on Perez's Facebook account.

Testimony details how Perez planned the event even doing "recon" at the mosque before the attack.

One witness even described Perez as excited about seeing the fire, jumping up and down like a little kid.

Perez faces up to 20 years in prison for the hate crime and up to ten for possessing an unregistered destructive device.

His sentencing hearing is set for October.
