Auto theft often increases in the summer

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Nearly 450 vehicles were stolen in Lubbock last year, according to the Lubbock Police Department. A large number of those vehicles were stolen in the summer.

Simply locking your doors can help you from becoming the next victim.

"A lot of times criminals will go from vehicle to vehicle to vehicle until they find one that's unlocked," said Lubbock Police spokeswoman Tiffany Pelt. "So by locking your vehicle you can prevent yourself from becoming an easy target and prevent your vehicle from being stolen."

A reminder: it's illegal to leave your car running unattended. And doing so makes your car an even larger target for criminals.
