Kitty key chain can lead to fine or jail time

LUBBOCK, Texas -

A key chain is stirring up controversy. There's a popular device shaped like the face of a cat with sharpened ears, popular for self defense it turns out it's illegal in Texas. If you're caught with one of these key chains you'll be violating the Texas Penal Code. That's a class A misdemeanor including up a year in jail a four thousand dollar fine or both.

"You can conceal it is potentially life threatening," said Kristi Wuensche, a black belt self defense instructor. "It is definitely very dangerous for the eyes, the face, cause that is where it is meant to go."

In the past three legislative sessions the state's changed its knife laws including laws Lubbock Rep. John Frullo wrote. He said the key chain issue will come up in the next session since these laws have been relaxed.

"It doesn't make sense that you can have a knife but you can't have this," said Frullo. "What it has to do is with the laws and what's in place and how people are interpreting them."

Wuensche said if you choose to carry a weapon you need to know how to use it properly. It won't automatically protect you. The Texas Penal Code specifically lists banned weapons. https://codes.findlaw.com/tx/penal-code/penal-sect-46-05.html
