Animal shelter expecting influx of rescues during Fourth of July

LUBBOCK, Texas -

While Fourth of July makes for a great day of fun and celebration, your pet may not want to participate.

Fireworks can be an anxiety trigger for dogs. Lubbock Animal Services Lead Officer Steven Greene said hearing the loud noises is what stresses the pets and suggests immediately comforting them. He said you can get a thunder shirt or wrap your pet in a towel or blanket, as cuddling will relieve stress from your pet.

Greene said if you are not around to comfort you pet, they will get out. He said the shelter often sees an increase in runaways on this holiday.

However, it is not just dogs you need to worry about, cats are also prone to running away from the loud noises.

"They're not as likely to get out but we do see an increase in cats getting away, and we pick up a lot more stray dogs or dogs that have lost their way home," Greene said.

Even if your pet is not bothered by the noise, it is still important to look out for fireworks.

"One of the problems is, if a firework is in your yard, whether it's used or un-used, it can be detrimental to the animal's health," Greene said. "It affects their gastrointestinal, so you need to check your yard before you let your pets back in because someone else's fireworks may have landed in your yard."

If you decide to take your pet out for the festivities, consider the weather.

"If you go to the parade, and your out on the asphalt, concrete, your animal is closer to that and it causes over-heating," Greene said. "You need to watch for stress, heat stress, you need to make sure their hydrated, and just like us you need to keep them out of the sun as much as possible because animals can be sunburned."

Greene said the adoption center's still crowded, but adoptions and returns to owners have been increasing each month.

"We have plenty of room for any animals that have to come in and we'll have extra staffing that day, both field officers and kennel officers so we can be sure to give the pets the best care possible," Greene said

If you see an animal out and about, call Animal Service at (806) 775-2716. Be prepared to give a location, breed, color and size.
