Hot Fourth of July, storm chance returns late week

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

THIS AFTERNOON: It's a hot one with lots of sun, mid to upper 90s across our area. There are a few storms in New Mexico near Roswell, but across the South Plains it's just sunshine.

TONIGHT: Low near 71, mostly clear. Wind SE 5-10mph.

FOURTH OF JULY: First, a reminder that many counties in our area have burn bans. Although we picked up some rain earlier this week, it hasn't ended the drought. Vegetation is still real dry. The fire threat is significant.

For the Fourth on Broadway Parade starting at 9 a.m. it'll be near 77, sunny, climbing to around 90 at Noon. High tomorrow 98, mostly sunny. Wind SE/E 6-12mph. There will be enough heat and humidity that we can't rule out an isolated shower or storm in the area. If you get one, it's not going to ruing the party. It'll be brief and will knock the temperature down a few degrees.

EXTENDED FORECAST: An upper-level disturbance moving east to west across the state will bring some rain to Dallas and Houston tomorrow. That disturbance will continue its westward movement Thursday, possibly bringing some showers to our area. At this point it looks more likely around Abilene.

We do have a slight chance for storms in the forecast Friday through Sunday. It also won't be quite so hot, with the high in the lower 90s next several days.

It looks a little hotter with plenty of sun by the middle of next week.

7-day forecast

Have a great rest of the day. Bobby will have a full update to the forecast here early in the morning. Happy Fourth of July.
-Matt
