United Way encourages kids to build reading skills

United Way encourages kids to build reading skills

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Nearly 150 children ages 3 to 12 attended the Lubbock Area United Way's annual Day of Caring Friday as part of the worldwide day of action.

It focuses on creating fun and engaging activities to help children develop a passion for reading, in hopes of getting them more engaged in literacy-related events.

"It's important for our Loaned executives to have the theme of literacy to show that learning is fun. Reading is fun. Today is all about that. It's about reading in a fun way to where children are encouraged to read when they get home," Kelsey Tubb of Lubbock-Area United Way said. She is leader of the Loaned Executive division, which includes dozens of volunteers whose companies have loaned them to the United Way to help run the annual campaign.

It's important for kids to keep reading this time of year to avoid the "summer slide", where they can fall behind their peers. Summer reading loss affects all children, but, according to the United Way, it's a greater problem among low-income students.

There are many reading events this weekend and in the coming weeks. Most are free. Click here - to find a summer reading event in Lubbock.
