Divine Oduduru: Every race is an opportunity

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Divine Oduduru brought home the sole national championship title for the Red Raiders at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Hailing from Nigeria, Oduduru is embracing the opportunity in the states that he didn't have at home.

"One day as a child, they were telling me when I looked for trouble, I'd run and you couldn't catch me," Oduduru remembered. "So from there they were like, oh, you have a talent, you can run."

Oduduru started running in high school and eventually represented his country. At the 2014 World Junior Championships, he finished second in the 200 meter race. He competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics and made it to the semi-finals running against Usain Bolt.

He chose Texas Tech for the opportunity of an education and program that would take him to the next level.

"I run most of my races with ease, but back home its more difficult. Coming here and being exposed to the world it's making life more easy. I can do things without struggling," Oduduru said.

According to Oduduru, every choice he has made and race he has run creates more opportunity. This season he broke four school records.

"What an incredible year Divine had for us. We broke the 4x100 record this year, the 100 meter record and the 200 meter record with him," Head coach, Wes Kittley, said. "So it's been a historic year for our program and for him. And I think let everyone know that we're definitely a sprint program."

The season culminated at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a win by 1/100th of a second in the 200 meter. It lead to a moment of pure excitement. Oduduru danced in front of the fans.

"I feel like when I have the tech logo and tech uniform on I have to make my school proud because I'm going to have my education and I'm going to prove a lot of things. I love Tech a lot because this school has done a lot of great things in my life," he added.

Over the summer Oduduru will compete at the African Championships and the Athletics World Cup.
