Chamber provides active shooter training

LUBBOCK, Texas -

There's one way to accurately describe how many mass shootings there have been in the United States this year: too many.

The Chamber of Commerce offered guidance for citizens, providing policies and procedures in case there's a killer inside a business. Corporal Chris Paine's program has national and international recognition. It's designed to give guidance to unarmed citizens during mass shootings.

"There is every statistic in the world to say the odds are overwhelmingly on your side already, without any training or anything else. Then you add training, preparation, forethought on the matter and specifics on planning, we can be completely successful in dangerous events," Paine said.

Part of Paine's training includes security camera footage that recreates actual incidents.

"It does lend itself to being exposed to what you might experience in a live event. So if you have been there before in a training environment, when a real life situation might happen, emotionally you have been there. So now, in a live event, you can work through that more quickly," Paine said.

Eddie McBride, with the Chamber, says the event couldn't have come soon enough.

"Over the last 15 years, a majority of the mass shooting incidents, over 50%, have actually occurred in businesses. That's why it's very important for us to have that training available. Just the awareness coming to our community is important," McBride said.
