The Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education program supports women entering doctoral programs in mathematical sciences

WHAT: Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education (EDGE) Reunion Symposium

WHEN: 6:30 p.m. Saturday (June 16)

WHERE: Matador Room, Student Union Building, Texas Tech University

EVENT:  Texas Tech University is hosting the 2018 EDGE summer session, which includes 14 women from across the U.S. who are scheduled to begin a doctoral program this fall. The program’s goal is to increase the success of women in mathematical sciences doctoral programs and place more women in visible leadership roles in the mathematics community. The summer session is just one aspect of the program, which strives to provide year-round, lifelong access to resources and a network of support as participants work on their doctoral degrees at institutions across the U.S.

Each summer, the program holds a Reunion Symposium at the midpoint of the program and invites the previous year’s cohort to join the current participants for a banquet and keynote speaker. U.S. Navy scientist Alejandra Alvarado, who was part of the 2002 EDGE cohort, will deliver this year’s keynote speech. Alvarado, who received her doctorate from Arizona State University in 2009, will discuss her experience in the program and its effect on her personally and professionally, and will offer advice to current participants.
