South Plains educators learn tech-savvy tools

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Educators are using diverse technology to better reach and teach students, which is also helping empower both teachers and students. Google for Education is bringing a global class to teachers across the South Plains.

"They are learning all kinds of thing from being able to create apps, develop and design apps on mobile devices, to playing with virtual reality through 360 content," said Monica Martinez, with the Ed Tech Team. "They are even creating virtual reality tours to other things that would be for productivity for a teacher like using google calendar, to gmail for productive communication."

The Ed Tech Team's main goal is to teach educators how to professionally and efficiently incorporate technology in to their daily instruction. The Ed Tech Team and Lubbock ISD hosted the third annual South Plains Summit featuring Google for Education. More than 400 teachers learned how to use Google Apps for education and other Google tools that support student learning in the classroom.

"Teachers come to these events they pick up ideas and then go back to the classroom," said Martinez. "They will try them out and implement them and sometimes things work beautifully and sometime they try something and then they are like that didn't quite work, but the idea is that they evolve and that they change and that they continue to put out new things and try new things and that it is OK to actually fail. I think it is a great way to model for a student that failing is a part of the learning process."

The summit included lecturers and hands-on workshops all led by software developers who helped build the programs. The next summit is set for Canyon at the end of the month.
