Walking and chewing gum may be a workout

Posted: Updated:
Chewing gum isn't usually considered good exercise but it may be a good way to boost calorie burn.
A new study shows men get a small benefit when they chew gum while walking. It says men over the age of 40, who chew gum while they walk, burn almost two additional calories per minute.
Oddly enough, women of any age did not burn any extra calories when they walked and chewed gum.
Scientists say more than 70% of adults in the United States are overweight or obese, so anything that burns a few extra calories can be an asset. But they say more research will need to be done with a larger group of people to evaluate whether gum-chewing could actually make significant difference in a person's weight.
