Kids may miss meals during summer break

Many kids who get free or reduced lunches during the school terms could go without regularly scheduled meals right now.

But this summer gap is being reduced because of South Plains Summer Solutions. Any child 18 or younger will get a meal for free about about 50 locations in the Lubbock and Frenship ISDs.

"Despite the fact that we know there are a lot of young people and children who depend on school meals, break fast and lunch, during the school year, the number of kids historically who have to these sites during the summer is much lower than we would like to see," Andy Black with the Texas Hunger Initiative said. "We really want to make sure that the word gets out there."

South Plains Summer Solutions is based in schools, churches, parks and rec centers around the community.
