Red Cross shares steps to take in preparation of hurricane season

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

(Press Release)

Today is the official start of the 2018 Hurricane Season and the American Red Cross reminds people to take steps now to prepare for all weather-related emergencies.

Hurricane season lasts until November 30 and can result in multiple tropical storms and hurricanes. The unprecedented 2017 hurricane season saw more than 3,900 Hurricane Harvey evacuees seek refuge in DFW following the storm’s historic landfall.

“While it is unlikely North Texas would bear the brunt of a hurricane or tropical event, these storm’s impacts can carry hundreds of miles inland,” said Katrina Farmer, regional disaster officer, American Red Cross North Texas Region. “The start of hurricane season is a good time to make sure people are prepared for all weather-related emergencies.”

 BE RED CROSS READY

  • Build an emergency kit. Each emergency kit should be equipped with a three-day supply of food, water, medication and hygiene essentials for each person in the household, including infants and pets. Many of these items are available through the Red Cross Store at redcrossstore.org.
  • Create an evacuation plan. Practicing the plan minimizes confusion and fear during weather-related emergencies and home fires. Plan escape routes and meeting points, register family members with special medical needs as required and make plans for pets.
  • Be informed. Pay attention to weather alerts and follow instructions, including evacuation notices, set by local officials.
  • Take a class. Take a First Aid and CPR/AED course so you know what to do in case emergency help is delayed.
  • Download the free Red Cross Emergency App. Select up to 35 different severe weather and emergency alerts with expert guidance on what to do before, during and after different emergencies or disasters. Available in App Stores or online at redcross.org/apps.

If you already have a disaster kit, now is the time make sure the food and water is still safe to consume and that copies of important documents are up to date. If you already have an emergency plan, talk about it again with family members so everyone knows what to do if an emergency occurs.
