Parent upset over Spanish class solution

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

A parent of a Mackenzie Middle School student is angry because her child failed a Spanish class. The parent claims the entire class failed.

She posted on social media:

"The school had a substitute for the Spanish class that did all lessons solely off a tablet, or as the school calls them 'Chromebooks'. The students failed because the teacher didn't teach the students. Now the school wants the parents to sign a paper stating the students drop the class or take summer school."

The parent declined to do an on-camera interview.

Lubbock ISD reports there are no transcripted failures of any kind from this class.

The district reports the Spanish teacher took a leave of absence due to medical reasons. Since the district did not have a certified Spanish teacher to substitute at the time, a long-term sub was placed to administrate the online certified Spanish version of the course.

The district had to make this same type of accommodation at two other schools, as well.

"When we rolled out that structure, we put several systems into place," said Joni Rodela with Lubbock ISD world languages curriculum. "First of all, even though there was a long-term substitute in the classroom that substitute was supported by district personnel. There was also a grader that was attached to the students that is a certified grader a teacher here in Lubbock ISD and that grader has the opportunity with each submitted assignment able to give feedback to the students and gave frequent feedback as they moved through the course."

The district is providing one of three options so students can recover the semester credit.

Students can re-take the course online during the summer, attend summer school for two weeks, or re-enroll for the second semester of the course in 2019.

Mackenzie students have not failed this course, according to the district. As of now, they have an incomplete.
