It's not 'STEM' for Mackenzie Middle, it's 'STEAM'

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Mackenzie Middle schoolers put an extra letter into focused education at "Design Day."

Instead of "STEM" it's "STEAM." Science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

It included all sorts of little experiments, from small fizzing compounds and fake blood, to designing and building roller coasters.

It was part of the school's effort to diversify students' education, giving them an opportunity to use any of those subjects in every day life.

And it gives them an opportunity to see what they might want to do when they grow up.

Educators say the practical applications, even if it's just making "slime" outside the classroom, gives students a sort of recess and helps them retain and better understand what they're learning from books.
