Red Raider softball shuts out SFA to take NISC opener

CONWAY, Ark. – Freshman pitcher Erin Edmoundsonstruck out seven in a complete-game effort to help the Texas Tech softball team record a 1-0 shutout of Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday to open the Conway Regional at the National Invitational Softball Championship.
The Red Raiders (30-26) secured thirty wins for the first time under head coach Adrian Gregory, winning for the first time in a national postseason event since 2012. The win marked the second complete-game shutout for Edmoundson and the third overall for Tech this season.
Redshirt sophomore Karli Hamilton hit an RBI single in the first inning that plated redshirt freshman Micheala Cochran for the only run of the game. With the hit, Hamilton extended her hitting streak to 17 games which now marks the longest of any Red Raider this season.
Edmoundson (16-11) took it from there as the lefty opened the game with two strikeouts in the first on her way to seven for the game. The Clear Lake, Texas, native limited SFA (31-23) to four hits on the afternoon and only five base runners in all. Her 16 wins mark the most by a Red Raider since Cara Custer posted 25 in 2012.
Ladyjack Makayla Sikes was equally tough in the circle, holding the Red Raiders to two hits in the contest. The senior, who entered with a 2.28 ERA, struck out four while walking five to fall to 18-11 on the season.
While Cochran and Hamilton recorded the only Red Raider hits, Tech drew five walks as a team to go with four stolen bases.
Cochran finished 1-for-3 with the run and two stolen bases. Hamilton added a 1-for-3 day with an RBI and stolen base. Junior Jessica Hartwell was among those who reached base, along with Edmoundson, redshirt freshman Heaven Burton and freshmen Kelcy Leach and Breanna Russell.
The Red Raiders advance to play the winner of UT Arlington and Central Arkansas on Thursday at 3 p.m. on Southland Digital Network. The winner will move on to the regional championship.
