LUBBOCK, Texas -

Early Sunday morning, police arrested a man following a SWAT callout near Niter and E 1st St.

Police dispatchers received a call around 3 a.m. that a wanted man was holding a woman inside a home.

Police said the suspect was high on narcotics and had a mental illness.

The man had reportedly screwed the doors to the home shut, and refused to let the woman leave the residence.

SWAT officers were called to the scene to conduct a warrant service.

The woman was taken from the home safely and without injury.

Matthew Shepard, 26, was then taken into custody without incident.

He's booked at the Lubbock County jail on charges of unlawful restraint, and interference with emergency phone call. He also had an outstanding Blue Warrant.
