Mayor's Marathon encourages healthy lifestyles

LUBBOCK, Texas -

It was a different look for Loop 289 Sunday, as runners across the state participated in the first "Mayor's Marathon Lubbock 2018."

Mayor Dan Pope raved about the event's turn out.

"Over 1,100 on a great spring day in Lubbock, Texas," Pope said.

Pope said it is about promoting a healthy lifestyle.

"Well we started a mayor's fitness council and," Pope explained, "they wanted to have a big event."

Council members brought up the idea of a marathon on the loop and even thought of a name.

"They said we wanna call it the Mayor's Marathon. I said, 'Could you come up with a better name,'" Mayor Pope said.

After just four months of planning, runners like Victor Maldonado hit the pavement.

"This is my 12th marathon and this is the toughest one I've ever ran," Maldonado said.

He said dedication is key to preparing for the runs.

"Make it a job, after you're tired, you have to get up and work, but after awhile it becomes an addiction," Maldonado said.

After Ashley Madrid had a baby less then two years ago, she made it a goal to run those 26 miles. She said she thinks it is important to set an example for her kids.

"We need to show them, even growing up, I know I didn't really work out much or anything," Madrid said, "it wasn't like shown to me so that's one thing that I'm trying to enable in my kids, to get out there and be a little more healthier and active."

Magaly Soto took first place for the females, finishing in just over 3 hours.

"I was always second or third so this is my first time being first female," Soto said.

Regardless if they are first or last, each runner said it was well worth it in the end.

"I thought I was going to die at the last two miles, but I did it. I made it," Madrid said.

The money raised from registrations will go to a variety of charities across Lubbock.
