Too close to call: Democrat could unseat Senator Cruz

LUBBOCK, Texas -

According to a recent poll from Quinnipiac University for the Texas senate race, there is a three point difference between incumbent Ted Cruz and challenger, Beto O'Rourke.

Senator Cruz, polled forty-seven percent of support from respondents, while forty-four percent favored the democratic congressman, Beto O'Rourke.

Those numbers are within the three point six percent margin of error, so the race is too close too call six months away from the general election.

However, to O'Rourke supporter, T.G. Caraway, "2018 is going to be a different year."

1993 was the last time a democrat represented Texas in the Senate.

According to Paul Cotter, a member of the Lubbock Republican Women, it's too early to tell how the race will go.

"I think a lot of people still haven't settled in for what they want in national politics and where it's going, I think in the end Ted Cruz is going to do an outstanding job. he's done an outstanding job for Texas and he's been a great person for our country, and as time goes on you'll begin to see separation," said Cotter.

For Caraway, he thinks it's time for democrats.

"Texas democratic party, we have more candidates this year than the past 30 years," he said. "When we come forward in November, well October when early voting begins, they're actually going to have a choice."

In the poll, 85% of republicans approved how Senator Cruz is handling his job.

"Texans are strong and they have core values, and you'll see them coming out," Cotter said. "I think Senator Cruz will do a good job. Impeccable character, he's strong and I know he'll do a great job for coming futures and the nation."

During his campaign, O'Rourke has raised $6.7 million in the first quarter. Cruz, raised $3.2 million

"Beto's made that point coming to Lubbock, you know going to Lubbock five or six times where the average democrat has 28 percent of the vote," said Caraway. "We're not going to get 28 percent of the vote in Lubbock county this time. We're going to get more than that."

According to pollsters, forty-six percent of republican Texans have a favorable view of Senator Cruz, forty-four percent do not.

Thirty percent have a positive view of O'Rourke, sixteen percent disapprove.

Early voting begins in October, election day is November 6, 2018.
