Fire consumes three homes west of Lorenzo

LORENZO, Texas -

A fire at the western edge of Lorenzo destroys three homes Tuesday afternoon. Volunteer fire crews report no one was inside and no injuries were reported.

Home owners Charles and Manuel Gonzalez noticed the smoke while driving back from a funeral.

"I was born in that house," Manuel said. "Everything is gone."

The Gonzalez's said they are frustrated. They claim when crews arrived on scene, they did not have enough water and were not focusing on saving the other homes the fire had not gutted yet.

"For that reason, their unprofessionalism caused to lose my brothers house," Manuel said. "Which that's all he had, that's all he has, and my moms house which we've been renovating for me to move into."

Manuel said he tried fighting the fire himself.

"I had to go around the truck and get a fire extinguisher," Manuel said. "I went around and tried to save the house with the fire extinguisher. One of the firemen told me go put on a suit and go help them."

Lorenzo Fire Department reports crew followed protocol, fighting it to the best of their ability with the right equipment.

"We had water in our trucks, but it takes us a little while," Jason Robb said. "We are all volunteers. Not everyone is around right then, some people live out of the county, we have 35 mile winds, single digit humidity. It's hard by the time we get here but we do what we can."

Ralls, Crosby, Idalou, and Lorenzo VFDs extinguished the fires safely.

"Lubbock has several different locations,we have one and there is, I believe there is 12 of us on ours," Jason Robb said. "I think Ralls has 17 on theirs. It's just during the day, we don't have a lot of people here. We have jobs, we have to support our family the same. In Lubbock, that's what they get paid to do."

No cause has been reported, and fire marshals will visit the homes Wednesday. Red Cross was on scene assisting both residents and crews.
