Museum of Texas Tech University celebrates nature and creation

The Museum of Texas Tech University and the College of Education will host the next event in the “Museum by Night: Illuminating Ideas”series at 6 p.m. Thursday (April 19). “Fertility: Nature and Creation” will feature discussions and demonstrations focusing on the relationship between human life and nature. The event is free and open to the public.

The event will feature live music from Orquesta Tipica de Texas Tech, a Tango orchestra, and a cash bar. There also will be a performance by members of the Flatlands Dance Theatre. The group will perform parts of the production “Love, Your Mother,” a piece that presents the complexities of motherhood. Themes like navigating new motherhood, juggling children and other priorities and hopefulness for children’s futures will be explored.

Joseph Manthey, assistant professor of biodiversity and genomics in the Department of Biological Sciences, will be the featured speaker. He will discuss fertility displays in nature.Stacey Jocoyassociate professor of musicology in the School of Music, which is housed within the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts, will appear via video talking about music and fertility in pagan rituals

“Museum by Night: Illuminating Ideas” is a collaborative effort between the museum and Texas Tech University. Events within the series are held on the third Thursday of each month and focus on various topics related to the human experience.

Throughout the evening, speakers, artists, scientists, theologians, poets and musicians address the theme and interact with the participants. Artifacts from the museum’s collections also are displayed and integrated into the theme. The goal of the series is to provide patrons of all ages and walks of life more access to the museum.
