NM State Police report four fatal crashes

New Mexico State Police responded to four separate fatal crashes that happened Monday, Sunday, Saturday and Friday. One of them occurred in Hobbs, another in Roswell, and two in Lea County.

Monday, April 9

On April 9, 2018 just before 8:00 a.m. the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash on West County Road near Marland in Hobbs.

The initial investigation indicated a 2013 Ford F-550 was traveling north on West County Road. For unknown reasons the Ford crossed the center line into the south bound lanes of West County Road. The Ford side swiped a Kenworth truck that was traveling south bound. The impact caused both vehicles to overturn. The male driver of the Ford F-550, Ector Diaz (44) of Hobbs, NM sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at an area hospital. The driver of the Kenworth was transported to an area hospital for injuries not believed to be life threatening.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash. No additional information is available at this time.

Sunday, April 8

On April 8, 2018 just before 10:00 p.m. the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash on Zinnia road near Red Bridge Road in Roswell.

The initial investigation indicated a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle was traveling east on Zinnia Road near Red Bridge Road. For unknown reasons the motorcycle left the roadway and crashed. The driver of the motorcycle, James A. Wooddell (52) of Roswell, NM sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at an area hospital.

Alcohol appears to be a contributing factor to the crash. No additional information is available at this time.

Saturday, April 7

On April 07, 2018 at about 3:00 p.m. the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash on State Road 128 around mile post 39 between Loving and Jal.

The initial investigation indicated a 2012 Kenworth semi-truck was making a left hand turn onto a lease road from the east bound lane of State Road 128.  A 2017 Ford F-350 was also traveling east on State Road 128, and for reasons unknown, failed to slow down and rear ended the semi-truck. The driver of the Ford F-350 Russell Shaw (47) of Pecos, TX sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at an Odessa hospital. The driver of semi-truck was uninjured.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor and seat belts were in use. No additional information is available at this time.

Friday, April 6

On April 6, 2018 just after 6:00 a.m. the New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash on State Road 18 at about mile post 1 south of Jal.

The initial investigation indicated a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle was stopped next to a 2003 Chevy utility truck on the east side of State Road 18. A 2015 Peterbilt semi-truck was traveling north on State Road 18, as the semi-truck approached the stopped vehicles, the motorcycle pulled into the lane of travel and struck the semi-truck. The driver of the motorcycle, Ashley D. Easter (28) of Eunice, NM sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The male passenger of the motorcycle was airlifted to a Texas hospital with unknown injuries.

Through further investigation, State Police determined the 2003 Chevy truck that the motorcycle was parked next to was stolen out of Monahans, TX. Charges are pending for the passenger of the motorcycle for receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle. The passenger will not be identified unless charges are officially filed. The driver of the semi-truck was not charged and their identity will not be released by State Police.
